What is the favourite prey of lions?

That really depends on where the prides are and what prey is available to them. In the Botswana study area, it was mostly impala, but then in other places in Botswana lions have been known to prey on hippos and even elephants. Lions are greatly adaptable, and their meals come from what is on offer. If these are domestic animals like horses, cattle or goats, there are retaliatory consequences by farmers. But it is interesting that some lion prides will ignore certain prey species as they do not have the generational knowledge how to hunt them. Consequently, two neighbouring prides in Botswana had very different diets….
