Frequently Asked Questions about LionAid the charity

Q:
You say you are committed to conserving lions. But what about all those other African animals deserving of conservation?

A very good question. Ecosystem health is built on the concept of biodiversity, starting with bacteria and moving all the way up the line to top predators. You could criticize us for focusing on the charismatic lions, but we feel than any ecosystem that has top predators present is a healthy one. We could be accused of a top down approach, and that is fair. However, if you look at the great changes in the ecosystem of Yellowstone National Park in the USA with the reintroduction of wolves, you will see the difference a major predator makes in the overall function of an ecosystem and biodiversity. Scientific papers have likened the loss of a top predator to a cascade that affects everything from trees to birds to insects.
